It's Chrissssssstmmmmaaaaaaaaassss!

December 2, 2015

I can hear Noddy Holder saying that as I write and if I look out of my window I can see that 'it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas' but everyone has an opinion on when it is right to put up your decorations. Officially it is Advent when people prepare for the coming of Jesus and it is not yet Christmas so it is Advent Calendar time but listening to the radio it is now ok to play Christmas records (that is according to Mr Evans). Don't tell anyone but my family and me often have family nights when we listen to Christmas music on and off all year round whilst having a game of something as we love Christmas and the feeling of togetherness that is created even more than usual at that time of year. Playing Christmas music is a must though when decorating the house ready for Christmas. I love decorating the house and putting up a tree (which has always has to be a real one, in fact not to be too over the top, we have 2 trees) and it such a great feeling of great joy when the angel, always the last thing to go on, is put on top and we turn off the house lights and see the glow of the twinkling fairy lights. It's a nostalgic time too. When you get out those decorations that bring back a memory of a life event, a past Christmas or a bitter sweet memory of a special person no longer with us you end up reminiscing about those times. My mum still has 'Pinkie' the fairy on the tree that we had when I was young so she must be more than ready, I'm sure, to draw her pension! With all that reminiscing it takes ages to put the tree up but it would take me all night anyway as it has to be perfect and I will juggle with the lights to make sure they are evenly spread and jiggle the decorations from here to there, standing back and then moving them again! It's a feeling like no other though and worth every minute, I must admit, but when should we put them up? My children always played a game on the last Thursday before December as we made our annual pilgrimage to a garden centre in Tod to get our tree and see Father Christmas. We always went early to get the best choice of tree but then the tree had time to be acclimatised in the garage before being brought into the house so it didn't shed too many needles. Last night, although we were a few days later this year and my children are now very grown up and didn't come with us, we still drove to Riggs playing Christmas music and talked about the game they used to play, counting to find out of which side of the car you could see the most decorations. In the past you could count on one hand but last night so many houses were already decorated. I have been busy too making decorations and floral arrangements to show everyone what I have to offer to order and buy so my house has felt more decorated than ever before. When is it right, though, to trim up and it is a question that everyone has an opinion on as I have seen a few of them on facebook. So now I'm throwing it out there to you... when you should put up decorations? What do you think? I definitely have to have them up in 2 weeks time when my daughter is home for Christmas and New Year from Kuwait! Also what special thoughts do you have about decorations and trimming up? It would be great to read each others comments so please comment on my facebook page with the post about this blog.
